The main purpose of the first activity (A1) is to define, map and characterize the Ecological Focus Areas (EFAs) in the agricultural dominated matrix. The Ecological Focus Areas (EFA) are key elements in the greening of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy. They represent crucial habitat patches to biodiversity conservation and for the provision of Ecosystems Services.

In A1 we will define, map and characterize the EFAs (habitat patches), in the two study areas (Sorraia and Almonda valleys) using airborne images. We will classify distinct types of EFAs, according to its vegetation structure and location, including riparian and terrestrial buffer strips, vegetation islands, edges and other relevant greening landscape elements.
